Notice Period Calculator – Find Your Last Working Day

Resigning soon? This calculator finds your last working day (LWD) from your resignation date and notice period – 30, 60 or 90 days, or 1, 2 or 3 months – and shows how a buyout or leave adjustment shortens it.

How the last working day is calculated

  • Days-based notice: if the notice starts on your resignation day, LWD = resignation date + notice days − 1. A 90-day notice from 1 January ends on 31 March.
  • Month-based notice: LWD is the day before the same date after the given number of months. Two months from 15 March ends on 14 May.
  • Buyout / leave adjustment: each day bought out or adjusted against earned leave brings the LWD one day earlier.

Some companies start the notice the day after you resign – switch the option to see that date.

Quick reference

Resigned on Notice Last working day
1 Nov 2026 30 days 30 Nov 2026
1 Nov 2026 60 days 30 Dec 2026
1 Nov 2026 90 days 29 Jan 2027
1 Nov 2026 3 months 31 Jan 2027

Can you shorten your notice period?

  • Buyout: pay your basic (or gross) salary for the unserved days. Your new employer may reimburse it.
  • Leave adjustment: some companies let you offset earned leave against notice days.
  • Early release: ask your manager once handover is done – many agree if work is covered.

Before your last day

  • Get your relieving letter and experience letter in writing.
  • Check your full-and-final settlement, including leave encashment and gratuity (see the gratuity calculator).
  • Transfer your PF to the new employer using your UAN.

How notice periods compare

Role / sector (India) Typical notice
Freshers and junior roles 30 days
IT services and consulting 60–90 days
Product companies and startups 30–60 days
Senior management 90 days or more
During probation Often 7–30 days

Elsewhere, norms are shorter: in the US most employment is “at will” and two weeks’ notice is customary; in the UK statutory minimum notice from an employee is one week after a month of service, though contracts often specify one to three months.

Notice period buyout: how much does it cost?

Buyouts are usually calculated on basic salary or gross salary per day of unserved notice. Example: gross salary ₹90,000 a month, 30 days left unserved, buyout on gross → roughly ₹90,000 ÷ 30 × 30 = ₹90,000. Many employers deduct this from your full-and-final settlement. Ask HR which salary component they use, and whether your new employer will reimburse it.

Planning your exit timeline

  1. Check your contract for the notice length, whether it is in days or months, and whether leave can be adjusted.
  2. Calculate your last working day with the tool above and share it with your new employer before signing.
  3. Resign in writing (email is fine) and ask HR to confirm the last working day.
  4. Plan handover: list ongoing work, documentation and owners.
  5. Collect documents: relieving letter, experience letter, final payslip and Form 16.
  6. Move your PF to the new employer using your UAN.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming 3 months = 90 days. Calendar months vary, so a month-based notice can be 89–92 days.
  • Accepting a joining date before HR confirms early release.
  • Leaving without a relieving letter – many employers ask for it during background checks.

Real-life scenarios

  • Standard 60 days: Resigning on Monday 2 November 2026 with notice counted from that day makes the last working day Thursday 31 December 2026.
  • Partial buyout: With a 90-day notice from 15 January and a 30-day buyout, the last working day moves from 14 April to 15 March.
  • Leave adjustment: Twelve days of earned leave adjusted against a 2-month notice from 1 March brings the last day from 30 April to 18 April.

FAQs

Can my employer reject my resignation?

An employer can ask you to serve the contractual notice, but generally can’t force you to keep working indefinitely. If you leave early without agreement, they may recover salary for the unserved period as per your contract.

Is notice period paid?

Yes. You are employed during the notice period and receive normal salary for the days you serve.

Do weekends and holidays count in the notice period?

Yes. Notice periods are counted in calendar days unless your contract says otherwise.

What if my last day falls on a Saturday or Sunday?

Many companies treat the previous Friday as the LWD. The calculator flags weekend dates so you can confirm with HR.
