Job applications, higher-studies forms and visa documents often ask for your marks as a percentage – but your marksheet shows a CGPA. Different boards and universities convert in different ways, so pick yours from the list and get the right percentage instantly.

Common conversion formulas

Board / university Formula 8.0 CGPA =
CBSE (Class 10/12, older grading) CGPA × 9.5 76%
Anna University CGPA × 10 80%
VTU (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 72.5%
JNTU Hyderabad (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 75%
GTU (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 75%
Mumbai University (CBCS, 10-point) 7.1 × CGPI + 11 67.8%

If your institution is not listed, check the back of your marksheet or your university’s website for the official formula and enter it in the Custom option (percentage = a × CGPA + b).

Why CBSE uses 9.5

CBSE derived 9.5 from the average marks of students in the top grade band across subjects. It is an indicative conversion – CBSE itself notes that it is approximate.

Percentage to CGPA

To go the other way, reverse the formula. For CBSE: CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5. For VTU: CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75.

Tips for applications

  • Always quote the formula you used, e.g. “78.85% (CGPA 8.3 × 9.5)”.
  • Some employers ask for “CGPA × 10” regardless of university – follow the form’s instructions.
  • Foreign universities often prefer the CGPA itself plus your university’s grading scale; WES and similar services do their own conversion.

SGPA, CGPA and CGPI – what’s the difference?

  • SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your average for one semester.
  • CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all semesters so far, weighted by credits.
  • CGPI is Mumbai University’s name for the same cumulative figure.

To work out CGPA from SGPAs: multiply each semester’s SGPA by its total credits, add those up, and divide by total credits. If every semester has the same credits, a simple average works.

How to convert CGPA for jobs abroad

US universities and employers usually use a 4.0 GPA scale. There’s no single official conversion from a 10-point CGPA – credential evaluation services such as WES convert course by course. As a rough guide, a 10-point CGPA of 8.0–8.5 is often seen as roughly a 3.3–3.6 GPA, but always rely on an official evaluation for applications.

Common mistakes

  • Using the CBSE formula for university grades. The 9.5 factor is specific to CBSE’s older grading system.
  • Rounding too early. Convert the exact CGPA, then round the percentage to two decimals.
  • Mixing SGPA and CGPA. Most forms want your final cumulative CGPA.
  • Ignoring the formula on your marksheet. If your university prints a conversion, that’s the one recruiters accept.

Grade cut-offs used by many employers

Campus recruiters in India commonly set a minimum of 60% or 6.0–6.5 CGPA throughout academics (Class 10, Class 12 and graduation). Some top firms ask for 7.0+ or 70%+. Knowing your converted percentage helps you check eligibility quickly.

Real-life scenarios

  • Campus placement form: A VTU student with 7.8 CGPA enters 70.5% where a percentage is required.
  • CBSE Class 10 (older grading): A 9.2 CGPA converts to 87.4%.
  • Mumbai University graduate: A 7.5 CGPI converts to 64.25% using 7.1 × CGPI + 11.
  • Anna University: 8.35 CGPA is 83.5%.
