Most colleges and universities require 75% attendance to sit for exams. Enter the classes you have attended and the total held so far, and this calculator tells you exactly how many you can skip – or how many you need to attend in a row to catch up.
The formulas
- Current attendance = attended ÷ total × 100
- Classes you can skip (when above the target): the largest x where attended ÷ (total + x) ≥ target. That works out to ⌊(attended − target × total) ÷ target⌋.
- Classes you must attend (when below): the smallest y where (attended + y) ÷ (total + y) ≥ target, i.e. ⌈(target × total − attended) ÷ (1 − target)⌉.
Examples
| Attended / total | Current | At 75% target |
|---|---|---|
| 45 / 64 | 70.3% | Attend the next 12 classes |
| 60 / 64 | 93.8% | You can skip 16 classes |
| 30 / 40 | 75.0% | You can skip 0 classes |
Things to keep in mind
- Many colleges calculate attendance per subject, not overall. Use the calculator once for each subject.
- Labs or practicals may count as two or three periods – enter them the way your college counts them.
- Medical certificates or duty leave (sports, NSS, events) are often added back – ask your department.
- Some institutions use 80% or 85% – change the required percentage field.
How many classes can you skip? Quick table (75% target)
| Classes held so far | Attended | Current % | Can skip / must attend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 36 | 90% | Skip 8 |
| 40 | 32 | 80% | Skip 2 |
| 40 | 28 | 70% | Attend 8 |
| 60 | 40 | 66.7% | Attend 20 |
| 80 | 70 | 87.5% | Skip 13 |
Worked example
You’ve attended 28 of 40 classes (70%) and need 75%:
- You need attended ÷ total ≥ 0.75.
- If you attend the next y classes: (28 + y) ÷ (40 + y) ≥ 0.75.
- Solve: 28 + y ≥ 30 + 0.75y → 0.25y ≥ 2 → y ≥ 8.
- So you must attend the next 8 classes in a row to reach exactly 75% (36 of 48).
Plan your semester
- Track each subject separately. Being at 85% overall won’t help if one subject is at 68%.
- Front-load attendance. Early classes build a buffer for illness or emergencies later.
- Count labs correctly. A 3-hour lab may count as 2 or 3 periods.
- Keep proof. Medical certificates and event participation letters can sometimes be added back.
Attendance rules at a glance
Many Indian universities follow 75% minimum attendance, with condonation (usually 65–75%) on medical or other genuine grounds, often with a fee. Some autonomous institutes and medical colleges set 80% or higher for practicals. Check your university’s academic regulations for the exact rule.
Beyond the minimum
Attendance isn’t just a rule – students who attend regularly tend to score better and get internal assessment marks that many universities award for attendance. Use the “can skip” number as an emergency buffer, not a target.
Real-life scenarios
- Mid-semester check: Rohit has attended 52 of 70 classes (74.3%). He must attend the next 2 classes to reach 75%.
- Planning a trip: Aisha is at 88% (44 of 50) and wants to miss a week. She can skip 8 classes and still stay at 75%.
- Stricter 80% rule: With 60 of 78 classes attended (76.9%) and an 80% requirement, Kabir must attend the next 12 in a row.

FAQs
Does attendance include the current day’s class?
Only once it has been held and marked. Update the totals after each class for an accurate count.
Can I use this for office attendance or school?
Yes. It works for any rule of the form “attend at least X% of sessions”.
What happens if I fall below 75%?
You may be detained from the end-semester exam or asked to pay a condonation fee, depending on your university’s rules. Many allow condonation between 65% and 75% with valid reasons.
Does the calculator assume future classes are held?
Yes. “Skip” means classes that will be held and you miss; “attend” means consecutive classes you attend.
