Comparing a job paid by the hour with one paid a salary? This calculator converts hourly wage to annual salary (and back) and breaks it down into monthly, semi-monthly, bi-weekly, weekly and daily pay.
The quick formula
Annual salary = Hourly wage × Hours per week × Weeks per year
For a standard full-time job (40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours), a shortcut is: hourly wage × 2,000 ≈ annual salary. So $25 an hour is about $50,000 a year (exactly $52,000).
Hourly to salary table (40 hours/week, 52 weeks)
| Hourly | Weekly | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | $600 | $2,600 | $31,200 |
| $20 | $800 | $3,467 | $41,600 |
| $25 | $1,000 | $4,333 | $52,000 |
| $30 | $1,200 | $5,200 | $62,400 |
| $40 | $1,600 | $6,933 | $83,200 |
| $50 | $2,000 | $8,667 | $104,000 |
Salary to hourly
Hourly wage = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year). A $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week.
Make the comparison fair
- Unpaid time off: if hourly workers don’t get paid holidays, use fewer weeks (e.g. 50).
- Benefits: salaried roles often include health insurance and retirement matches worth 20–30% of pay.
- Overtime: non-exempt hourly workers earn 1.5× after 40 hours – see the overtime calculator.
- All figures are before tax.
Salary to hourly table (40 hours, 52 weeks)
| Annual salary | Hourly | Monthly | Bi-weekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $35,000 | $16.83 | $2,917 | $1,346 |
| $45,000 | $21.63 | $3,750 | $1,731 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $5,000 | $2,308 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 | $6,250 | $2,885 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $8,333 | $3,846 |
| $150,000 | $72.12 | $12,500 | $5,769 |
Part-time and variable hours
For part-time work, enter your typical weekly hours. If your hours change from week to week, use an average over the last 8–12 weeks. Someone working 25 hours a week at $18 an hour earns $450 a week, about $1,950 a month and $23,400 a year.
Country notes
- United States: the standard full-time year is 2,080 hours. Pay periods are commonly bi-weekly (26 a year) or semi-monthly (24 a year).
- Canada: a 37.5–40 hour week is typical; many employers pay bi-weekly. Vacation pay (often 4% of earnings for hourly workers) is on top of hourly wages.
- United Kingdom: full-time contracts are often 37.5 hours a week, and annual salaries are paid monthly. Statutory holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks, which is paid.
- Europe: working weeks of 35–40 hours are common, and some countries pay a 13th or 14th monthly salary – divide annual pay by the actual number of payments.
Gross vs take-home pay
Everything here is gross pay. Your take-home pay will be lower after income tax, social security or national insurance, pension contributions and benefits deductions. As a rough planning figure, many US workers take home 70–80% of gross pay, but it varies widely by state, filing status and benefits.
Freelancers: setting an hourly rate
If you’re switching from salary to contracting, don’t just divide your old salary by 2,080. Freelancers pay for their own benefits, equipment, unpaid admin time and gaps between projects. A common rule of thumb is to charge at least 1.5–2× the salaried hourly equivalent.
Real-life scenarios
- Comparing offers: One job pays $27/hour, another $54,000 a year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks, $27/hour is $56,160 – but if the hourly job has two weeks of unpaid leave, it’s $54,000, the same.
- Going part-time: Cutting from 40 to 30 hours at $32/hour reduces gross pay from $66,560 to $49,920 a year.
- Freelance quote: A designer who earned $70,000 salaried ($33.65/hour) charges $60/hour freelance to cover benefits, taxes and unbilled time.
- UK salary: £32,000 a year on a 37.5-hour week is about £16.41 an hour.
