Worked extra hours this week? Enter your hourly rate and hours to see your overtime rate, overtime pay and total gross pay – at time and a half, double time, or a custom multiplier.
How overtime is calculated
- Overtime rate = regular hourly rate × multiplier (1.5 for “time and a half”).
- Overtime pay = overtime rate × overtime hours.
- Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay + any double-time pay.
Example: $22/hour, 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours → overtime rate $33, overtime pay $198, total $1,078 for the week.
US overtime rules in brief
- Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must get at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek.
- Exempt employees (many salaried professional, executive and administrative roles above the salary threshold) are not entitled to federal overtime.
- Some states go further. California, for example, requires daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours in a day.
- The “regular rate” can include shift differentials and non-discretionary bonuses, which raises the overtime rate.
Overtime quick table ($20/hour)
| OT hours | OT pay (1.5×) | Week total |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | $60 | $860 |
| 5 | $150 | $950 |
| 10 | $300 | $1,100 |
| 20 | $600 | $1,400 |
Step-by-step example with double time
Maria earns $24 an hour in California. One week she works 12 hours on Monday and 8 hours on four other days (44 hours total):
- Daily overtime: on Monday, hours 9 through 12 are overtime at 1.5× (California pays double time only beyond 12 hours in a day), so she has 4 overtime hours and no double time.
- Regular pay: 40 hours × $24 = $960.
- Overtime pay: 4 × $36 = $144.
- Total for the week: $1,104.
(Weekly and daily overtime aren’t double-counted – the same hour is paid at overtime only once.)
Overtime rules in other countries
- Canada: overtime thresholds are set by province – commonly 40 or 44 hours a week, often with daily limits of 8 hours – and paid at 1.5×.
- United Kingdom: there’s no legal right to extra pay for overtime; it depends on your contract, but average pay can’t fall below the National Minimum Wage.
- European Union: the Working Time Directive caps the average working week at 48 hours including overtime, unless an individual opts out where allowed. Overtime rates are set nationally or by collective agreements.
- India: factory and many shop-and-establishment laws require overtime at twice the ordinary rate of wages.
How overtime affects your yearly income
Five overtime hours a week at $33/hour adds $165 a week – about $8,580 a year if it continues year-round. That’s why consistent overtime can be the difference between two job offers with similar base pay.
Keep track of your hours
- Log start, end and break times every day – apps or a simple spreadsheet both work.
- Compare your records to every pay stub.
- If overtime is missing, raise it with payroll quickly; in the US you can contact your state labor department or the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division.
Real-life scenarios
- Warehouse shift: Luis earns $19.50/hour and works 48 hours. Overtime is 8 × $29.25 = $234, for a weekly total of $1,014.
- Nurse with double time: At $42/hour, 36 regular hours plus 4 hours of double time on a holiday pays $1,512 + $336 = $1,848.
- Retail holiday season: Ten weeks with 6 overtime hours a week at $16/hour adds $1,440 before tax.

FAQs
Are salaried employees entitled to overtime?
Some are. In the US, salaried workers who earn below the federal salary threshold or whose duties don’t meet an exemption test are non-exempt and must be paid overtime.
Does paid time off count towards the 40 hours?
Under federal law, only hours actually worked count towards overtime. Some employers and union contracts count paid leave anyway.
Is overtime taxed more?
Overtime is taxed as ordinary income. A bigger paycheck may have more withheld, but your actual tax is settled when you file. Check current federal and state rules for any special treatment of overtime pay.
